Jon McLaughlin: Will be disappointed he failed to stop Teuma’s opener as the Union skipper’s strike appeared close to his body before whistling past him. Great double stop on 71 minutes before a penalty was awarded for a handball from Goldson. Dived the wrong way as Vanzeir slotted into the corner. He may have been culpable for the opening goal but he saved an absolute doing. 6

James Tavernier: Vital stop to deny Adingra in the first half but the captain was fairly ineffective in an attacking sense. Blocked a shot on the line to stop a certain goal in the final knockings. 5

Connor Goldson: Was furious at conceding the opening goal. Booted the ball away in frustration 10 minutes into the second half when Teuma was on the deck but the defender wanted to get a move on. Harshly penalised for an apparent handball which led to the referee awarding a penalty after checking VAR. All over the place as Vanzeir found himself running through on goal only for McLaughlin to save the day. 5

James Sands: Pinged a well-hit shot on target on eight minutes after good work from Tavernier but was straight at Moris. Tremendous defending to deny what looked like a certain Union goal on 25 minutes when he slid in and blocked a tap in which resulted in the American slamming into the post. Perhaps unlucky to receive a yellow for catching Amani on the halfway line. Stumbled on the ball and then into Vanzeir at the start of the second half but fortunately, it was accidental. Moved to the right of a back three when Davies came on. 5

Borna Barisic: Forced a decent save out of Moris from a well-struck free kick in the opening seven minutes as Rangers looked on top but his performance was to rapidly decline from then on. He was skinned by Amani midway through the first half which resulted in Union getting excited in front of goal but the Belgian’s failed to get a shot away. It was a warning, however, the Croatian never covered himself in glory for Union’s opening goal when he and Jack failed to clear the ball that resulted in Teuma firing in past McLaughlin. 4

John Lundstram: Was deployed in a deep-lying position on the right-hand side which was to allow Tavernier to venture further forward but he struggled to impose himself on the game from there. He did deny Lapoussin a shot a goal and was hurt in the process and the Scouser noised up the Union crowd when he and Teuma got involved in a bit of afters. Moved more centrally when Yilmaz and Davies were brought on. 4

Glen Kamara: Gave the ball away 90 seconds in but fortunately Lundstram was on hand to recover. Unfortunately for the Finn, he and Jack struggled in the middle of the park pretty much throughout.  Was often caught in possession or guilty of giving the ball or fouls away cheaply. 4

Ryan Jack: Poor night from the 30-year-old. Simply looked off the pace and struggled to exert any sort of dominance in the midfield. He was caught by a flailing boot on 17 minutes but managed to run it off. He and Barisic were at fault for Union’s opener when they were beaten too easily before Teuma was able to fire home. 4

Malik Tillman: Bright start from the young American. Was popping up everywhere linking up play and looking so comfortable in possession. Almost carved an opening in the first five minutes when he got to the byline but his ball across was blocked. Faded as the match wore on before being subbed. 6

Rabbi Matondo: The Welshman struggled to impose himself on the game in the first half. Was guilty of giving away cheap fouls and often poor in possession. 3

Antonio Colak: Was starved of service but worked his socks off for the team. Won a free kick on the edge of the penalty area six minutes in. Should’ve done better with a header from a pinpoint delivery from Tillman but the Croatian couldn’t get any purchase on the ball. Carved open a great chance midway through the second half as he fired the ball across goal but there were no takers. 5

Substitutes

Ridvan Yilmaz: Replaced Barisic on 67 minutes to make his Rangers debut and looked lively. Lined up a shot late on, almost Ian Durrant v Marseille-esque, as he cut across the ball but what looked like a goal-bound shot was blocked. 4

Ben Davies: Replaced Jack on 67 minutes for his first Rangers appearance. Took up position on the left of a back three. A heavy touch almost led to a Union second, fortunately, McLaughlin pulled off a great double save before a dubious penalty was awarded for handball. Looked rusty and booked for a late challenge. 3

Scott Wright: Replaced Matondo on 76 minutes and looked to create and make things happen from the off. Was brought down as he was charging into the penalty area but the Union defender got a foot on the ball beforehand. 3

Tom Lawrence: Replaced Tillman on 76 minutes but couldn't influence the game in any way. 2
