Sensational! The only word for it and after the week we have had.

I just didn’t see it coming.

If ever a week summed up this club, then it’s this one. From the depths of despair of awful officiating and losing a last-minute goal at the weekend to the Alfredo news and social media unrest. I have to be honest, I feared the worst. PSV away to qualify is probably as tough as it gets at this stage.

But never write this team off. They have balls of steel at times and especially in Europe. PSV are a fantastic side with unbelievable talent and they strongly fancied themselves, in fact, they had almost taken progression for granted.

Now we are in it, the draw includes trips to Ajax, Liverpool and Napoli! I can’t wait! This is what it’s all about, the biggest teams on the biggest stage. Make no mistakes, all three are cracking sides and we have an uphill task but we also have a fighting chance and that’s all you can ask for. The objective was to get here and we are, now we can enjoy the whole thing.

But yet again it goes back to the above, it would be foolish to write this side off and I won’t. Nobody will fancy coming to Ibrox and we have to give it our shot. I fancy we will. Be brave, go for it and be positive, just as we did in Eindhoven.

Rangers and Van Bronckhorst were ballsy from the start, the selection was progressive and crucially there was NO two defensive midfielders which I sincerely hope is the end of that for this team. It’s overkill and it slows this team down, especially in Scotland.

The truth for me is almost crazy but Rangers give more respect to SPL journeymen on away trips than we do from some of the top sides in Europe.

That situation must change and we have to start playing to our strengths. We are capable of being an attacking, expansive side with some incredibly gifted talent. I just feel like we should be letting the handbrake off a bit more, our domestic away form shows that.

When we do go to impose ourselves and set a tempo then we are a much better side. That’s what we did in Eindhoven, we used the ball incredibly well at times and played expansive football. The John Lundstram effort, after a long passing movement, was a sign of how we can play.

We are a good side when we move it quickly and impose ourselves in games progressively. Now I’m certainly not here to suggest I know more than Giovanni, not in the slightest, and I am a massive fan of his. It doesn’t stop me thinking we need to take the handbrake off, at times, however.

Rangers Review:

Eindhoven was a remarkable result and goes down as one of our best nights and it’s all credit to the manager and the players. After the week that was they showed they have a spirit and togetherness. They showed they are a team and one person who I sincerely hope still has a part to play is Alfredo Morelos.

I’ve been harsh on him but I do think he needs an attitude adjustment and to be in better condition. Evidently the manager shares that view also. But that’s when my criticism stops. The rest is for the club to deal with and despite what people think, I certainly don’t see the character assassination some people have suggested. In fact, I believe it’s a boot up the backside Alfredo may actually need. It may turn out to be a man management masterclass.

The door is not closed, but the gauntlet has been thrown down and I knew it would happen sooner or later with Giovanni. Despite what you may think, Gio is a tough disciplinarian and a consummate professional. If someone steps out of line then it doesn’t surprise me that he will act for the best reasons of the team and the group of players.

To do that before a massive season-defining moment in qualifying deserves massive credit and it shows a strong leadership.

It shows balls, the same balls the squad showed in Eindhoven to bring a massive moment to this football club. The journey we dreamed of ten years ago is now complete. Rangers are back on the biggest stage.

With that big stage brings money and opportunity and it should bring funds for the manager. We need one or two more options and given everything he has done for this club's reputation and bank account, he deserves that backing.

But for this moment, he deserves all the credit, the players and staff deserve to enjoy it. We are a brilliant team and Alfredo is every bit a part of it, I sincerely hope he takes the road to redemption and joins this team once more.

The Champions League awaits us all and the young Colombian that arrived several years ago deserves it as much as anyone in that squad.

Enjoy the moment Gio and the staff, it’s a glorious one. Now take that into this domestic season and let’s put this league on notice.
