There aren’t many better sights in football than an Alfredo Morelos knee slide and we were treated to another couple on Wednesday night at a venue he treats like his own backyard.

His performance against Hearts in the 3-0 win at Tynecastle was vintage Morelos. As well as his two goals, he led the line well, often linking up with Ryan Kent and Fashion Sakala amongst others.

The Colombian is one of a number of players who look reinvigorated since Michael Beale returned to the club as manager. He’s had 10 goal involvements in the Rangers boss’ first 10 games in charge and is slowly but surely recapturing the sort of form that endeared him to the Ibrox support in the first place.

As we’ve come to expect, however, life is never dull when Morelos is around and Wednesday's game was no different.

El Bufalo’s second goal of the evening was initially ruled out for offside which prompted the Jambos support to goad the striker with chants of 'You fat bastard'.

Morelos would have the last laugh when the goal was given following a VAR check and he promptly commenced that trademark celebration of his, sliding on his knees before putting his finger to his lips in response to the jibes being directed his way.

It was a celebration that irked former Rangers hero Neil McCann, so much so that he called Morelos ‘an idiot’ while providing co-commentary on BBC Sportsound.

He would go on to defend his view later when he said: “I don't know why he does it. I know he's a pantomime villain.

“He reacted when he scored his first one. Then he goes to the wee corner. I've said before how close this ground is. He runs to the fans and antagonises them.

“I said at the time I didn't like it. The second one, because we were waiting so long, he had no reason to celebrate other than to antagonise the Hearts fans. He's right in the corner of the section, running away from his own fans. I've seen him do that at Fir Park.

“I just don't know what goes through the boys' head.”

It’s fair to say McCann’s comments riled the vast majority of the Rangers support who roundly criticised him on social media with some calling for him to be removed from providing punditry on RTV.

Personally speaking, I was taken aback by his comments. If we are lambasting players for celebrating goals, particularly after being on the receiving end of a bit of abuse from opposition supporters then the game’s a bogey.

To call Morelos an idiot was bang out of order. That's a view Michael Beale echoed speaking at his pre-Ross County press conference yesterday.

“I won't agree with that [Neil McCann's comments],” he said.

“I think the Hearts supporters were maybe trying to incite Alfredo for the whole 90-plus minutes.

"If we are going to say that players can't celebrate goals now, we might as well stop the game. There was a long stoppage for that goal and I think he went and celebrated - he was what, 20-plus yards from them?

“I think a lot is made about them sort of things in Scotland that is not made down south. I have never known this to be a big thing. When we score our second goal and our first goal we are two yards from their fans.

"We have got to celebrate the goal. What do you want us to do, not celebrate and then everyone say he's moody and wants away because he don't celebrate? I think Neil is obviously on the radio, he's passionate, he played for both clubs, he's trying to be impartial and he's said what he has said. I think he will regret that more than maybe Alfredo celebrating.

“I think it is much ado about nothing. We should probably be talking about some of the abuse that comes the other way in our stadiums not so much the players celebrating goals.”

It’s hard to argue with a word Beale said on the issue and, having worked in English football for the best part of seven years, he’s sadly right in stating it’s not something that is necessarily pinpointed across the border.

We should be talking about an Alfredo Morelos who looks hungry, dangerous and slowly returning to the bulldozing frontman terrorising defences up and down the land.

Love him or loathe him, he has been a revelation since arriving on Scottish shores in the summer of 2017 and if these are to be his final few months in a blue jersey then let’s hope we’re witnessing a few more knee slides from here on in.
