A summer of change is on the way at Ibrox but the two positions Michael Beale doesn’t need to strengthen are the full-backs. That’s according to former Rangers defender Tom Cowan.

After turning down moves to Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur, Cowan was part of the early Nine-in-a-Row title-winning sides under Graeme Souness and Walter Smith.

Despite residing in South Yorkshire, Cowan keeps a close eye on events down Edmiston Drive and has been impressed with Beale’s start to life as manager.

“One defeat out of 16 games is brilliant,” he told the Rangers Review.

“In any other job that would be amazing except in Glasgow where you’re expected to be winning the league. It’s weird because you’re only judged on the Rangers v Celtic games.

“Celtic have just been far too good this year, they just keep winning.

“I think there’ll be a massive overhaul this summer, it’s an absolute certainty and that’s when Beale will be judged with the players that are coming in.”

With a squad rebuild in the offing, Cowan says two players who should be paramount to next season’s title charge are James Tavernier and Borna Barisic.

The Croatian is one of a number of players set to enter the final year of their current deals.

“We have a good enough squad but Morelos is going to go so we need a centre forward and we need a backbone to the team at the moment, one player in every position really,” Cowan said.

“The one guy you wouldn’t think about replacing is Tavernier. A right-back scoring 100 goals is ridiculous, you’re never going to get that again.

“He’s definitely surpassed what he probably thought he would achieve at Rangers.

“I would offer Barisic a new contract, he deserves it for his performances, definitely. I think he’s been excellent.

“He’s not a bad defender and he’s very good going forward. He’s got a great left foot and some of the balls that he puts in are amazing so you can see why Ridvan’s not been getting a game.

“It’s whether he signs it or not. He may have some other offers, you never know what’s going on in the background.

“When I was moving to Sheffield United, Hearts had come in for me but I was definitely not signing for another Scottish club.

“Luckily I was offered a move down south. Once you play for Rangers or Celtic, even just staying in Scotland and moving to a lesser team is hard work. I wouldn’t have fancied it.”
