Former Rangers full-back Alan Hutton has branded criticism of old teammate Allan McGregor as "ridiculous".

The 40-year-old has been on the end of some scathing social media criticism over his role in both goals at the weekend.

But retired Scotland international Hutton points out that Motherwell’s second goal was hit with such pace the keeper couldn’t hope to stop it.

McGregor has made a number of high profile mistakes this season but Hutton isn’t having the suggestion he should be dropped for Ibrox no.2 Jon McLaughlin.

Asked by Football Insider if the veteran should be dropped, Hutton said: “Not for me, no.

“It’s amazing how people can comment and judge based off one performance, it’s ridiculous.

“I don’t think he was to blame for that second goal against Motherwell. It was at his near post, but the boy had hit it so hard that he barely had time to react.

“The amount of saves this guy has made throughout the years, and even during that Dortmund game, is incredible.

“People are just so quick to criticise. Yes, Jon McLaughlin has done well when he’s come in – but right now, Allan McGregor should be number one.

“That’s the way it should be until he decides to move on or retire.”
