STEVEN Gerrard bemoaned Rangers lack of killer instinct as he watched his side draw 1-1 with Motherwell at Ibrox.

Fashion Sakala’s first half header was cancelled out by a Kaiyne Woolery effort.

The Light Blues boss spoke to various media outlets afterwards and Derek Clark assesses what was said.

Gerrard on the result

"Look it's two points dropped, there's no getting away from that," he told Rangers TV

"I think box to box today we played some outstanding stuff. We got there on numerous occasions but our last pass, our final cross and us taking our chances just wasn't there today. We've only got ourselves to blame.

"No one will remember [the attacking play]. We're at Rangers. I thought Joe Aribo, Glen Kamara, Steven Davis, a lot of players from box to box today played some incredible stuff.

"Our preparation to build the attacks was up there with the best we've had but when you get past the box you need someone to find those moments of quality to create goals, to assist goals and then to go score them.

"That for me today was a 3-0, 4-0 game. When you don't get the second you leave yourself vulnerable at the back. We haven't defended one situation well in the second half and we've paid for that.

"We've had these lessons before. That's the concern. We give the players the detail and the detail doesn't really change. We have to take ownership of it.

"That was a straight-forward home win for me and we should be three points clear at the top. Instead, we're only one and that feels frustrating right now.

"We'll put it in context at the end but right now it doesn't feel like there's anything positive from today."

Gerrard is right it was two points dropped and they do only have themselves to blame as they should’ve been out of sight in the first half.

It’s one thing looking impressive and dominating for large spells but it means absolutely nothing if you don’t have an end product and Rangers were guilty of that on Sunday.

The old adage in football is if you don’t kill teams off at 1-0 they’ll always have a chance of getting back into the game and Motherwell took advantage of that.

It will be a concern for Gerrard and the coaching team as he highlights when he says they’ve had those lessons before.

Gerrard on front three

“They’re all looking really sharp in training but you’ve got to go and deliver on the big stage.

“We’ve been patient with Fashion, he’s had a bit of a stop-start pre-season but he’s ready now, he’s fit. Kemar Roofe came in fresh, he had that fantastic chance on 47 minutes so we’re getting there.

“We’re creating the opportunities, I think at half time we said to them we created 14 chances, 6 on target, you’ve got to get more than one goal on the back of that otherwise you’re going to leave yourself frustrated at the end of the game.”

It was a real opportunity for Fashion Sakala, Kemar Roofe and Scott Wright to show the manager they are due a run in the team yesterday and at times they linked well but the invention and energy seemed to diminish in the second half and Sakala and Wright were substituted.

As Rangers players they need to produce more, his goal aside, Sakala had plenty of energy but he’s erratic in his finishing and lacks composure at crucial points. Wright didn’t have the best of games and Roofe likewise. It will be a concern for Gerrard because his forward players have not got going so far this season, he needs more goals and assists from them and fast.

Gerrard on Juninho Bacuna

“He’s looking more and more ready now, when he came in he hadn’t had a pre-season, he came straight on loan from Huddersfield.

“He’s got major talent, you can see some of the positions he picked up today and some of the combinations he’s looking for.

“Again, he might be looking at me wanting a bit more game time which is a good place to be in but there’s going to be an opportunity for him very soon because he’s looking more ready now, he’s fitter and more robust and he knows a little bit more about our style and how we want to play so I think more opportunities for him are imminent.”

It was a welcome and some may argue overdue debut from Bacuna yesterday. He showed some decent flashes at times and fizzed an effort just wide but he’s certainly someone, given his reputation, that could spark this Rangers team into life.

It’s clear Gerrard has been patient with him and making sure he’s up to speed before introducing him to Scottish football but you would fully expect him to feature against Livingston in midweek and play a more substantial role going forward.
