Jon McLaughlin: Punched out well after a ball over the top in the first half left the defence all at sea. Good handling throughout and distribution typically sound. An excellent save at the end from Slimani at close-range and another from Kadewere ensured a very good night for the Scotland cap. Always looks calm and assured in a way that must settle a defence.  8

Nathan Patterson: Faced a very tough test against the impressive Cameroon forward Toko-Ekambi. The 29-year-old is quick, direct, dangerous and set out to cause problems down the left flank from the start of the game. Made an outstanding 60-yard run to the byline on 33 minutes but his cut-back was intercepted. Combined well with Wright in a pacy and direct right-flank twin threat. Improved as the game went on, and despite the odd shaky moment, another impressive showing.

Connor Goldson: Gave the ball away early on to the aggressive Lyon press and was lucky Toko-Ekambi shot straight down McLaughlin’s throat. Setteld into the game thereafter and was impressive in the face of sustained pressure. Struggled to marahall his troops against set-pieces. Bailed his young partner out on 81 minutes after he looked to have been fouled but the referee saw no infringement. 7

Calvin Bassey

Miss-timed the offside trap early on and was fortunate Moussa Dembele fluffed his lines with the finish when through one on one. Very calm defending against Toko-Ekambi after he burst through at pace. The youngster could have dived in but stood his ground and stifled a dangerous moment. Was unfortunate to register an own goal after Cherki's shot deflected off his foot and into the net. Strode out from the back and drove his team up the pitch impressively, even showing a nifty step-over. An excellent performance that underlines his potential once again. Leon Balogun may struggle to get back in. 8

Borna Barisic

A tough night up against the brilliant youngster Rayan Cherki but did well on the whole. Shuffled brilliantly to open space at the edge of the box but was forced to take the shot on his weaker right foot and hit straight at the keeper. Perhaps could have got closer to 18-year-old Cherki for the Lyon equaliser but that's easier said than done. Good evening on balance.

John Lundstram

Gave the ball away too often but got through a power of dirty work in the middle of the pitch. Didn't excel but showed he can do a job for his new manager when called upon. How often that will be with so much quality around him is still open for debate.

Glen Kamara

Numerous intelligent interceptions in a congested midfield area. Showcased his quick feet and control with a brilliant assist to find Scott Wright for the opener. Kept up his usual standard of European performance. Substituted at half-time, presumably to give him a rest. 7

Scott Wright

Didn't stretch the play enough on the flank but had the odd moment before opening the scoring. Was fortunate when his edge of the box trundler deflected in. He was boosted by the strike and nearly got a second moments later with an excellent driving run but his shot flew just past the top corner. Substituted with half an hour to go. 6

Ianis Hagi

Had little influence in a poor first half. The lowlight was a wonderful team move that ended abruptly when the Romanian took on a bizarre long-range shot from 30 yards despite Wright standing in acres of space. His execution was off all night and he didn't do his chances of replacing Joe Aribo in a central role more permanently much good. 5

Ryan Kent

Showed intent from the get-go, skipping past Vogel with ease and winning a free-kick in a dangerous position. Looked lively on the occasions he picked up the ball against his young opponent. Brilliant moment to create a chance by nutmegging Vogel and playing in Roofe. Had a sensational creative spark in lofting the ball to Kamara in the lead up to the goal. Was less of a threat in the second half but worked hard to shuttle back and help his team defend the onslaught.

Kemar Roofe

Ingenious first-time shot after an exquisite Kent assist that smacked the post. Roofe showed real predatory instincts to take the strike on first time from distance after spotting Pollersbeck off his line. Struggled to make the ball stick under pressure from the Lyon defenders but was constantly on the move and worked his socks off.

Substitutes

Steven Davis

Brought on after break for Kamara. Grafted hard in the engine room. Cleared a late header off the line. 5

Juninho Bacuna

Started out as the no.10 after coming on for Hagi but ended the game in an unfamiliar centre-forward role after Roofe departed the action. He struggled to make an impact but showed his excellent technical qualities with a couple of nice touches. 4

Scott Arfield

Replaced Wright on the right-hand side. Tried to get forward but Rangers were mostly pinned back from the moment he came on. Booked. 4

Joe Aribo

Replaced Roofe with 17 minutes to go. Looked lively and his brilliant cross nearly found Bacuna. Nearly got a winner right at the death. 5
