SCOTT WRIGHT SHINES

Scott Wright has found game time hard to come by since his move from Aberdeen at the beginning of 2021, but he will now be hoping to now make an impact under Giovanni van Bronckhorst. The attacking midfielder certainly took his chance tonight as he starred for 60 minutes against Lyon. Wright looked a constant threat in the final third and he was never shy to take on his man. The 24-year-old grabbed the opening goal of the contest too, albeit via the way of a wicked deflection, but his positioning for the strike was impressive. He now needs to build on this performance to become a regular starter for Rangers.

NATHAN PATTERSON DESERVES MORE

Nathan Patterson is another who has, more often than not, found himself on the substitute bench for Rangers since breaking through into the first team. Steven Gerrard was always a big admirer of the youngster, but he rarely opted to throw him in at right back ahead of his captain James Tavernier. Giovanni van Bronckhorst appears to be sticking with a back four, but he really needs to find a way of incorporating both Tavernier and Patterson in his plans. The Scotland international was solid against Lyon and always looked to break forward when given the opportunity. He is simply too good to be left on the bench.

OWN GOAL SHOULD NOT OVERSHADOW BASSEY SHOWING

He may have turned a goal into his own net tonight, but that should not overshadow another impressive display by Calvin Bassey. The full-back has been utilised as centre back in recent weeks with Filip Helander and Leon Balogun both out injured, and he has certainly taken his chance. Bassey is commanding in the air and his defensive positioning is impressive. Tonight, the former Leicester man marshalled Moussa Dembele well alongside Connor Goldson and the ex-Celtic man was rarely given a sniff in the final third.
