FESTIVE football rumbles on at Ibrox later today as Rangers face Dundee United.

Three days on from a 2-0 win over St Johnstone, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side will look to win their sixth successive league game under his management.

United of course inflicted the only defeat Rangers have suffered in the league this season back in August.

Here, The Rangers Review analyses three key issues ahead of the tie.

Varying the approach

Since arriving, Van Bronckhrost’s tactical tweaks have proved hugely beneficial. Teams no longer have foresight as to how Rangers will set up.

Within the 4-3-3 shape used in recent home games, a sole central midfielder has been joined by a defender to help progress the ball. While two advanced No.8s complete the attacking quintet.

Based on what we’ve heard from the Rangers boss, it seems that each game plan is tailored to the opponent more specifically than the previous regime.

“It varies who we’re playing against and what tactics the other team are doing,” James Tavernier said of the game-upon-game instructions handed out to players.

In Dundee United’s win over Rangers earlier this season, they profited from their opponent's predictability in certain phases of the game. A luxury they won't enjoy today.

“We are prepared for any style of play that we face tomorrow, we will adapt to either long-ball or build-up from the back and ensure we get the right pressure,” Van Bronckhorst said yesterday.

Is it time to rotate?

Today’s match is the sixth contested by the Ibrox side in December, with another two to follow.

Such a heavy schedule will surely lead to rotation in some areas, especially given the quick turnaround from Wednesday’s tie.

Could Nathan Patterson come in for a start? Is Glen Kamara due a rest at the base of midfield with both John Lundstram and Steven Davis waiting in the wings?

Although tempting to not unsettle a winning formula, Van Bronckhorst will be mindful of the risk of overloading certain members of the squad. Don’t be surprised to see the likes of Patterson, Fashion Sakala or Lundstram given a start.

Maintaining momentum

When Steven Gerrard departed for Aston Villa, few could have foreseen an outcome as positive mid-way through December.

There is a distinct possibility that a trip to Pittodrie will come off the back of seven straight league victories since Van Bronckhorst's arrival.

Having done the hard yards by gaining nine points from trips to Livingston, Hearts and Hibs - the visits of Dundee United and then St Mirren must bring two victories.

It's a more than achievable task and would mean the momentum felt currently only increases before a double-header with Aberdeen and Celtic.
