Ally McCoist was having none of Jeff Stelling's assertions that Celtic keeper Joe Hart should be in with a shout of making England's Euro 2024 squad simply because Jack Butland has been touted for a place.

The Rangers No.1 has been in outstanding form since his summer move to Ibrox on a free transfer. The 30-year-old joined as a free agent having left Crystal Palace at the end of his contract.

His form has been so good for the Light Blues that there have been various calls by pundits and fans for Butland to regain his spot in the England set-up.

A debate was sparked on talkSPORT this morning about the situation between McCoist and Stelling, with the latter not so keen to see Butland involved in Germany.

McCoist started: "I am speaking on behalf of the family here. My boys have texted me to tell Jeff that Butland is in all day. He has been absolutely terrific. He is playing every week."

Stelling then asked: "How many saves does he have to make every week?"

McCoist pointed out that the saves Butland makes are 'important'.

Stelling added: "It doesn't matter what club he is at. He hasn't had an England cap since 2018 and he won't be going in my opinion. Sam Johnstone and Dean Henderson battling for the number-one spot at Crystal Palace.

"I tell you what, Ally, the number three goalkeeper in the England squad won't play.

"You take James Trafford a Burnley, he's represented England at every level, he's 21. You give him the experience of being at a big tournament, he is not going to play. Pickford will play every game unless he is unfortunate to get injured, then Ramsdale will come in.

"James Trafford won't play but everyone can see he is an outstanding young goalkeeper. He is the future and with the best will in the world, Jack Butland isn't the future at the moment.

"He has had a lot of indifferent years and he is doing brilliantly at Rangers. You made the point about Joe Hart, why don't we go there as well then?"

McCoist: "Because he's not as good as Butland at this moment in time."
