Tom Lawrence will be absent from Rangers' Scottish Cup tie against Ayr United this weekend.

Philippe Clement has confirmed the attacking midfielder will sit the fifth round match out as a precaution.

The Wales international has stepped up his return to the first team in recent weeks, getting more and more minutes on the pitch.

The 30-year-old started against Aberdeen on Tuesday night and played a vital role in helping to secure a big three points for the hosts at Ibrox.

The former Manchester United academy product hasn't had his injury issues to seek since his arrival in Glasgow over 18 months ago.

And while some may concerned to see him drop out of the matchday squad tomorrow, the manager is pretty relaxed about the situation, as he revealed Ben Davies is back involved, as is Ryan Jack.

"Ben Davies is back in for selection," the Belgian said. "Tom Lawrence won't be in the squad, but more a precaution, similar to with Jack midweek to ensure enough recovery in between minutes. Ryan Jack is back in the squad.

"With a history of injuries we need to be careful with players, there is clear communication with the medical staff and the players."

Leon Balogun took a sore one against Livingston last weekend, suffering a suspected fractured cheekbone.

He will be unavailable for Saturday evening's game, however, could be in contention to face Ross County in Rangers' Premiership game in hand over Celtic next week.

Clement added: "Leon [Balogun] went to see a specialist, I expect to see him back next week. Unsure if Ross County or the weekend but he will return with a mask.

"Sometimes you need a few sessions to get comfortable in the mask."
