Steven Naismith 'dodged a bullet' by not re-joining Rangers in the summer, Kris Boyd has joked.

The former Gers striker was heavily linked with a return to Ibrox when Russell Martin was appointed as head coach back in June.

He was a former teammate of Martin's at both club level with Norwich, and the international scene with Scotland.

In the end, the move failed to materialise, with Naismith also linked with the Kilmarnock job before Stuart Kettlewell was selected as Derek McInnes' successor.

Martin and his backroom staff were of course all sacked in early October after just one league win in seven attempts. Danny Rohl eventually took over.

Naisy did eventually find a new job in coaching, as Steve Clarke appointed him to his backroom staff with Scotland as his assistant manager following John Carver's exit.

And fresh from last week's success against Denmark, where Scotland qualified for the 2026 World Cup, Naismith appeared on The Warm-Up podcast alongside Boydy and Chris Sutton, joking he'd only just sobered up after last week's wild celebrations.

Boyd - who played with Naismith at Killie firstly, before Rangers - said: "I'll tell you what, Naisy's dodged a bullet! Russell Martin wanted to take him onto his coaching staff!"

Naismith replied: "I'm happy with my job with Scotland – I'm going to the World Cup."
